As Project Apollo began to gather momentum, NASA embarked on an interim program – Gemini – to practise the orbital rendezvous, spacecraft docking and spacewalking techniques that would be needed to achieve President Kennedy’s goal. The sophistication of the Gemini spacecraft was enough to convince the USSR that they, too, should aim to place a man on the Moon, but in January 1966 Soviet space efforts suffered a serious setback with the death of Sergei Korolev, the nation’s most capable rocket designer. Meanwhile, Gemini flights got under way. It wasn’t all plain sailing by any means, but by a process of a trial and error NASA’s astronauts learned what it took to navigate and work in space – as well as taking some of the most stunning photographs of space ever recorded.

Format: 220 x 280 mm casebound with dust jacket and ribbon, 96 pages
